The project funded by Manos Unidas and Spanish public agencies targets the 4 schools of St. Matia Mulumba Kazzansaya – Buikwe district, St. John Baptist Kikoko PS and St. Kizito Walubira PS – Mukono district and Nabuganyi RC PS – Kayunga district.
It entails the drilling of 4 deep boreholes to provide a reliable source of clean water to the school population and surrounding communities.
Four project inception meetings were held to inform the stakeholders about the project objective and outcome. During the meeting, the Water user committee was instituted to oversee the daily operations of the borehole and ensure it remains maintained to serve clean water to the population all-time.
A borehole was drilled at St. Matia Mulumba Kazzansaya which yielded over 2 cubic liters of water. A hand pump has been established and very soon the children will be enjoying a fresh supply of clean water. The safety of the children at school has been increased because they do not need to cross the busy Kiyindi road to fetch water from the contaminated open well and pods whereas the 5 water tanks at the school shall be saved from being used by the school neighbors.
Also, another borehole has been drilled at St. John Baptist Kikoko primary and it yielded 6 cubic liters of water. The subsequent activities related to establishment of the borehole shall be on-going soon. The children will no longer be required to fetch water from the shorelines of Lake Victoria where they are exposed to offensive language and abuse by the fisher folks
Over 2000 children, teachers, community members will have access to a sustainable water source thereby using their other time for more productive activities instead of searching for water. There will also be improved gender relations in homes.
